Why Do the Majority of Small Businesses Fail in the First 5 Years?

Hello! My name is Glen Runyon.  I am the founder and Managing Director of Pyramid Consulting, LLC. Pyramid Consulting is a privately held management consulting company specializing in working with small businesses for over 10 years.

Based on statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Labor, 65% of independent small businesses go out of business in the first five years.  The primary reason for most small business failures is that they simply run out of money.

I started Pyramid Business Coaching to increase the survival rate for small businesses by providing professionally trained business coaches to support the small business owner.

A key missing element for the independent business owner is the lack of a tried and true owner’s manual.  That’s where our licensed professional business coaches can help.  A professional business coach is an expert in various areas and processes of a business.  In practice, a coach takes the time to understand the owner’s business completely and provides systematic development strategies that help the owner reach their financial goals.

"The firm had grown so very fast that all of the initial processes and procedures had to be reviewed and modified to meet the needs of the expanding work force and management team.  Glen was instrumental in assisting Arrowhead to accomplish this and in a manner where the processes were useful and to the point."

COACHES CORNER

When you are sick there are several universally accepted symptoms (indicators).  First there is the most recognized general human symptom of having a fever measured with a thermometer to see if your body temperature is above normal.  For other specific diseases, there are unique symptoms that require diagnostic tests such as blood tests and CAT-scans.  But more importantly you need the expertise of a doctor to understand the relationship between the identified symptoms and the underlying disease.

How do you tell if your business is sick?  For essentially all business (especially small businesses) the universally accepted general indicator of a growing problem is sustained negative cash flow measured by available cash.  But beyond just having negative cash flow, how do you know what underlying factors of your business are causing the problem.  Just like diagnosing a specific disease, you need to have tests performed to see what other symptoms are present.  And just like the case for a doctor, you need the expertise of someone who has been trained to understand the relationships between your specific business problems (symptoms) and the root causes.

Don’t wait until it is too late thinking that everything will get better if you just keep working harder.  A popular definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.  A variation of this definition for the small business owner is running your business the same way day in and day out and expecting different financial results.

Let one of Pyramid’s Licensed Professional Business Coaches analyze your current business structure to identify weaknesses and then work with you to eliminate those weaknesses…FOREVER!!!
